Dorothy Matilda Brockwell, and Her Young Daughter Cynthia Brockwell of College Glen, Maidenhead, Berkshire

"In loving memory of Cynthia Brockwell.  Died Oct. 4th 1939 aged 7 years - Safe in the arms of Jesus - Also her mother Dorothy Matilda Brockwell.  Born Feb. 6th 1907.  Died Dec. 9th 1942. - Re-united."


Dorothy Matilda Brockwell was born Dorothy Matilda Bunker on 6th February 1907 in Kirtlington Oxfordshire, the youngest daughter of Alfred John Bunker, a foreman at a farm, and his wife Eliza Rosina Griffin.

Dorothy first appears on the 1911 Census aged four years old, living with her parents and elder siblings, Alfred James, Ellen Rosina, Florence Bessie, and Polly Lilian, in Kirtlington, Oxfordshire.

In 1930 in Maidenhead, Dorothy married Reginald Hubert Brockwell.  They had their first child, a daughter Monica in later that year on 24th November, closely followed by Cynthia on 6th December 1931, and Regina in 1938.

Reginald Hubert/Herbert Brockwell was born on 18th September 1906, in Maidenhead, Berkshire to Charles Frances Herbert Brockwell, a coal porter, and his wife Lucy Rose Eustace.  Reginald first appears on the 1911 Census, aged four years old, living with his parents at 42 College Gen, maidenhead, Berkshire.

Dorothy, Reginald, Monica, Cyntha, and Regina appear on the 1939 England and Wales Register, living at 49 College Glen, Maidenhead Berkshire. Reginald's occupations is given as plumber of gas and hot water.

Sadly, Dorothy and Reginald were to suffer the loss of their daughter Cynthia on 4th October 1939, aged just seven years. On 11th October 1939, the Maidenhead Advertiser carried the following announcement:

"Thanks For Sympathy

Mr. And Mrs. Brockwell wish to thank all kind friends and neighbours for sympathy shown in their sad bereavement, also for floral tributes." 

Dorothy was to pass away on 9th December 1942, three years after the death of Cynthia and four years after the birth of her youngest child, Regina. On 16th December 1942, the Maidenhead Advertiser carried the following announcement:

Brockwell- On the 9th December at Eversley, Dorothy, the beloved wife of Mr. R. H. Brockwell, of Maidenhead."

On 17th December 1964, Reginald was involved in an automobile accident. On 23rd December 1964 the Maidenhead Advertiser reported:

"Crossroads Crash

A van and a car collided at the Hawthorn Hill crossroads, Touchen End, on Thursday night of last week. The van driver, Mr. Edwin Brown (22) of Stoney Rd, Bracknell, and a passenger Mr. Reginald Brockwell (58) of 49 Belmont Rd, were taken to Maidenhead Hospital with face injuries, both were discharged after treatment.

The driver of the car, Jane Sandy (42) of Barkham Rd, Wokingham, was treated for arm injuries, but was not detained."

Dorothy's two surviving daughters grew up to marry and have children of their own. Reginald was to pass away in 1983 in Windsor, Berkshire.

  2. Thank you for posting the photo. To complete the story, Reginald Herbert Brockwell eventually re-married, in 1960 to another Dorothy - Dorothy Isabel Moyle. Reginald died in 1983 and the second Dorothy died in 1995.

    2. My wife's grandmother was a Brockwell (though not connected to the ones on the monument), and I am archivist for the Brockwell Family History Society - these two things being linked of course!
