Cemetery Sunday - Broken

Broken Cross - All Saints Churchyard

A selection of broken or damaged gravestones I have come across on my cemetery wanderings.

There are many factors that contribute, vandalism, weathering, poor maintenance and local authorities pushing over stones in the interests of health and safety.

  1. Lot are laid down for H&S reasons though the unexpected can happen like frost damage and falling on a p00r guy walking past. Might have been tiring to tell him something.

    1. I do understand the need to lay down unsafe stones, but what annoys me is when concils lay them down with the information side facing down. Makes things I little difficult.

  2. So sad to see this! I have seen some broken headstones carefully pieced together like a jigsaw but no attempt to "glue" them! Quite a range of breakage styles here!

  3. Yes, to put them information-side down, is plain mean and nasty. I am not aware of any here that have been deliberately lain down due to OH&S reasons. Maybe our cemeteries are too young as yet.

I come across quite a few headstones that have cracked and broken through the effect of water and wind. I have also seen more than my fair share that have shattered when the gound has subsided into the grave itself. And lots of vandalism, especially at Randwick cemetery, one of the few cemeteries I have wandered that I found without a soul.

  4. Vandalism is the most pointless reason for such broken headstones. Sometimes, I wonder if it is a bit of poor workmanship or poor luck when ones stone breaks in half.

  5. The moral of this story seems to be if you want a lasting memorial don't have large cross! I know that in many cemeteries if stones etc become loose they are deliberately laid down before they fall.

  6. Or make sure your monument is made of one thick slab!
I have seen some of those people riding lawnmowers and not really paying much attention to the stones or the grave around the cemetery. It is appalling.

    1. ooh, that is a terrible reason for a stone to break!! you wouldnt think they would be so careless, isnt it their job to keep the cemetery in a good state!
