I have to admit, it is a bit odd as most fallen or broken gravestones are indeed laid flat across the grave. But in this churchyard a lot of gravestones are propped up against standing stones. The only reasons I can think they would do this is to, A) stop the stones stinking into the ground as the churchyard is rather boggy at times and, B) so that rain water doesn't pool in the cravings eventually eroding them away.
Unfortunately it hasn't worked in this case as the lent stone is completely illegible now. In fact a lot of the stones in this churchyard are unreadable. I have plans to document all of the legible stones left. But life keeps getting in the way, quite ironic really.
this would not have looked so bad were it simply laid flat in front of the foot stone. now it looks a little disrespectful.
